A StrivU Story: Charles Briggs, VideoFlyte
What do you get when you combine flight, engineering, entrepreneurship and art? VideoFlyte; a new company in Lincoln, Nebraska, that specializes in drone aerial video and photography. And Charles Briggs, co-owner, has a story worth sharing.
Current Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln grew up in small-town York, Nebraska. With a driven spirit and broad range of interest, he not only balances life as a husband and student, but also lives out his dream as a tech savvy, flight enthusiast, and creative entrepreneur!
Growing up, Charles took interest in flight and “the way things work together” as a youngster, looking to his pilot grandfather as a role model. You could say Charles was just “born with it” when he purchased his first airplane in elementary school and began owning and operating a lawn mowing business. During his years at York High, Charles took many art classes where he honed his talent for a camera, Adobe software and HTML. Recognizing his unique interest and innate talent for engineering and art, he began to dabble with drones.
Charles college years at UNL served as his launching pad, allowing him to gain real-life experience by conducting research on how drones can benefit the conservation world. Charles’ willingness to try new things and desire to learn helped him launched VideoFlyte in May of 2017. Along with partners Jason Nabb, Larry Hageman & Christie Hageman, their company is working to communicate on a higher level; taking purposeful aerial images for companies, providing service for data acquisition and drone education (YAY!).
“You just have to do it”
While it’s clear that Charles has talent within the drone industry, he admits that he had to “do his homework” to achieve his goals. He spent many hours gaining knowledge through forums and watching YouTube videos to start his flying career. You could say Charles wasn’t afraid to crash and burn. He explains his first drones bought from Amazon were $40. “It’s like riding a bike – you will fall.”
Like all great entrepreneurs, Charles never turns off the “on” switch to his brain. He explained being an entrepreneur more as a lifestyle than an 8-5 job; something of which he really enjoys.
Students, Charles encourages you to utilize your journalism and digital media class as a way to build knowledge with a camera, software programs and how the media and film industry works. From there, you can operate a drone. After all, it’s just like a camera in the sky!
The future is looking up for Charles as he works to turn VideoFlyte into a full-time job, continuing to pass the controller to youngsters, educating the Midwest about the importance of the drone industry and growing his small business.
Striv is excited to partner with VideoFlyte in the future to provide high-quality Drone Education to our Striv Schools. Be on the outlook for more blog posts and an upcoming workshop!
